God Is A Consuming Fire | By Maxine G. Hedlund

Sometime ago, glancing up at the sun, because of its brightness I could only look for a second or two. Attempting another glance I realized that no one could learn much about the sun from looking at it, as a lingering glance would cause blindness. Pondering this, I thought about the consuming brightness of God and how nothing of darkness can exist in His light. Just as sure as the brightness of the sun would consume one’s eyesight, God’s brightness would consume everything impure or of the+ fallen order in its pathway.

Yes! God IS a consuming fire! He is a cleansing and purifying fire! God reveals Himself by fire in many ways because His fire serves varying purpose! His manifestation of fire is as varied as His complex nature; for those of His spirit, – for those who contain His substance, He is a cleansing fire. Therefore when they draw near to Him they engender fiery trials because His fire starts burning away their carnality! In other words His brightness consumes their darkness! And the more darkness present, the more intensely painful and enduring the cleansing process is. For those who choose to become like Him – holy and righteous, God will burn away the obstacles that would hinder their pursuing His righteousness. But for those who rather want to continue their sinful ways, He is a devouring fire!

God refers to the use of fire in scripture many times. One of the first ways is when He appeared as a “smoking furnace and a burning lamp” to make covenant with Abram. “…behold a smoking furnace and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram …” Genesis 15:17-18. The word fire is used in regards to burnt offerings and sacrifices many times. One example is found in Leviticus 8:21: “…it was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.” It is next used when the LORD appeared to Moses in a burning bush, calling him to his destined purpose. “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the mist of a bush: and he looked, and, beholds, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed” (Genesis 3:2)

But the greatest manifestation of the LORD as fire is when He led the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the wilderness. “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them in the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night”. (Exodus 13:21)In this instance, He used fire to guide as well as to protect His children from the cold desert nights. The Lord’s presence constantly hovering above them also reminded and assured them that though their journey was difficult, God was with them as their journey provider, – Jehovah – Jireh.

The Israelites witnessed God’s power when they were camped at Mt. Sinai: “Moses brought forththe people out of the camp to meet with God… And Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: … and the whole mountquaked greatly.” (Exodus 19:17-18) When Moses was going up into the mount to receive the LORD’S commandments: “The glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai … and the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fireon top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.” (Exodus 24:16-17). Here the Lord revealed Himself to the Israelites by fire.

The word fire is often used in the New Testament. John the Baptist made a prophetic statement to the people: “I indeed baptized you in water to repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and in fire:” (Matthew 3:11). His prophecy came to pass when cloven tongues of fire sat upon those gathered in the upper room. The cloven tongues of fire signified the fulfilment of God’s promise to the house of a future time He would give His children a new covenant. In the new covenant He would write His law in their hearts. This meant they would not just obey His written law given at Mt. Sinai which demanded outward obedience. “But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; after those days saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jeremiah 31:33).

The Holy Spirit’s presence, signified by the tongue of fire was a sign that God was about to do a refining work within His people to prepare them to receive His inward law. Only then could they obey Him from their hearts. Outward obedience fostered a life of fear; fear of the harsh judgement the law administered if they disobeyed it. However, before God could place the new covenant in their hearts, He had to remove the carnality in their inward parts. Then the Holy Spirit could lift them into a higher spiritual paradigm, above and beyond outward obedience alone. In this higher paradigm they would become the essence of the law.

John the Baptist said: “And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire” (Matthew 3:10). The axe that began to chip away at the root of the “tree” of their carnal hearts was when John was sent to “ prepare the way of the lord” into their hearts through his message of repentance. The refining fire of genuine repentance would prepare their hearts to receive God’s laws and learn His ways! The Israelites had promised God that they would “… walking his ways and …keep his statutes and his commandments…” (Deuteronomy 26:17) But under legalistic obedience they could not understand – nor walk in – God’s ways. At best they could be obey Him. God’s ways are above His acts. Only Moses, who knew God intimately, could understand God’s ways. God “…made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.” (Psalms 103:7)

In the higher paradigm to which the Holy Spirit was lifting God’s children, they would to know Him! God sent Yeshua to portray His ways before them by the way He lived; yeshua revealed God’s character. The knowledge and understanding they gained by observing God’s character enable them to perceive the life and ways of the new spiritual paradigm they were entering. Marvellous blessings come from God’s refining fire! They lift us into higher realms of His spirit.

God uses fire to refine, but He also uses fire to bring judgement! In the New Testament fire most often refers to judgement. Yeshua said: “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” (Matthew 7:19) Jude speaks of the judgement of Sodom and Gomorrah. The term fire is used when referring to the lake of fire, the fire of hell and everlasting fire. Mark quotes Yeshua as saying: “if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:”. (9:45)

Peter, in his second epistle, tellsus “…God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell… into chains of darkness…” (2:4). Jude verse 6: “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chain under darkness unto the judgement of the great day”. The word everlasting in Jude 6 means eternal, not age lasting like in some other places. The word chain in this verse indicates imprisonment, being bound in darkness until God’s final judgement of them. Their darkness IS their “everlasting” chain! Once they chose in eternity past to turn away from God and His light, their disobedience plunged them into the realm of darkness. Darkness is merely the absence of light! When they removed themselves from the only source of light, they “chained” themselves to darkness. Should they attempt to return to God’s light now, its brightness would consume them.

Jude 10 says, about those who were possessed with the powers that chained themselves to darkness, “… these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.” The moment he was removed from God’s presence he began to shrivel, wither and decay. Demonic forces look ugly because they have shrivelled, withered and decayed from their original glory. Not only are they removed from God’s presence, they continue to get further from Him they enter deeper and deeper darkness.

Scripture speaks of many level of darkness, just as it speaks of many kinds of fire. It speaks of darkness, great darkness gross darkness, outer darkness and deep darkness. Closer to heaven it’s just darkness, but the further away you get from the source of life, the greater becomes the darkness.

Satan left the source of his life and he left the source of his light. He started as a decaying being in his form, but he also became an ever darkening being. Jude called the ungodly ones among them: “… wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of the darkness forever” (13). The further removed from God you are the more your life and light dims, and continue to dim, so you wither in form and in spirit, in every way.

When we disobey the Lord and violate His authority, we begin to wither and decay just like Satan and the fallen powers and principalities. That is why the Lord works His refining fire in us is, so He can remove everything that would cause us to wither and darken rather than to increase and manifest the light of His glory! Zechariah says God will refine us “… as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried…” (13:9)

Because Satan and his angels are withering deteriorating creatures, God created hell for them! The nether world is their home! Yeshua clearly stated that hell, or everlasting fire, was “… prepared for the devil and his angels”(Matthew 25:41). Satan is called the prince of darkness; it is the lowest point of creation; – the farthest away from heaven! Hell was not created for man! It was created as God’s merciful provision for Satan and his angels, temporarily, for in its darkness they find respite from the consuming fire of His light. Their existence could not continue if surrounded by light, because light extinguishes darkness, and darkness is their only substance. Satan and his cohorts are granted the darkness of hell as their abiding place lest they be consumed before God’s purposes for them are finished.

God allow their existence for a period of time because they are His tool by which to purge the carnal nature from His seed. Ephesians tells us that: “… we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (6:12). We wrestle against the powers and principalities of darkness because there is darkness in us! In our carnal nature they find common ground on which to ensnare us. But by wrestling against them we overcome them and remove the common ground on which they can gain a foothold. Whatever darkness we overcome in our battle is forever banished from our being unless we choose to invite it back.

Darkness did not exist on the world before Lucifer entered it; darkness came with him! And in his fall he didn’t come to know good and evil, to him evil became his good. Darkness became his only substance for he no longer possessed anything of good! He is as much the embodiment of evil as God is the embodiment of love! Contrarily, in Adam’s fall, he fell to knowing good and evil. His spiritual retained his eternal DNA which undergirded him with good. His becoming part of the lowered carnal world was his evil.

Before Adam’s entrance into the world of time he lived in eternal realms where all things are good! But Satan controls the carnal world so Adam came under the influence of evil! Though his conscience led him to do good, the canal world also influence him and was helpless to live the way of his former life.

God had warned Adam not to eat of the forbidden tree because of the duplicitous worlds he enter, knowing the duplicity would cause him to be unstable and thus powerless! Scripture says “a double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8). And knowing this, God, in mercy, sent His children a savior to lift them above the power of the “ruler of darkness”; a saviour to empower them with ability to live a Godly life!

Adam’s seed, in their carnal state, continues to live under the curse of original sin. And while Adam’s seed “know” good, it is their “knowing” of the carnal world that Satan finds entrance into them. Their “inherited” darkness gives Satan ground – a playground if you will – on which to feed off their darkness. His time to do so is limited, however, and he knows it, so he continually goes about “… as a roaring lion … seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:80). Again we are reminded of how important it is to understand Satan’s rights to “invade” us. Thus we can cooperate with God in his desire to remove Satan’s “playground”. God wants His light to shine in us, and then Satan cannot remain.

God sent Yeshua to bring His Light into this world’s darkness. He was the bearer of God’s light and clearly stated so. “I am the light of the world:” (John 8:12).Johntells us He “was life; and the life was the light of men” (1:4). His light frees fallen man from evil’s influence! The more His light shines through man’s being, the more Satan is blinded and incapacitated causing him to recede. For this reason we are told to use God’s word against him, because the light of God’s word makes him flee! His light is all we need to overcome Satan’s presence in our darkness. The more His light fills our being the less we are buffeted by Satan.

Our archenemy buffets our soul by using many form of enticement in his attempt to keep possession of our darkness. He used beguilement in Genesis 3, where Eve said “The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” (13). He used trickery when the Gibeonites tricked Joshua into sparing their lives. Satan uses deception, lies, manipulation, – anything that can find acceptance in our fallen nature. Only God’s discernment can enable us to withstand Satan’s ploys and remove his strongholds.

Satan’s ability to buffet souls is limited though, because darkness will not survive on the earth indefinitely! Either it will be consumed or it will be cast, with hell, into the lake of fire. Revelation says: “death and hell were cast into the lake of fire” (20:14). Death is a temporary reality, and hell is a temporary place in which all forms of evil dwell. Both are destined to be cast into the lake of fire.

What is lake of fire? What is hell? Where is hell? Some say hell is in the sun; some say it is in the center of the earth; some say it is a state of being; some even say there is no such place! Since death and hell are cast into the lake of fire and all darkness is consumed when coming in contact with the fire of God’s light, could the lake of fire be the consuming fire of God Himself? His fire brings darkness and evil to nothing, to a final death, which Revelation speaks of as the “second death”! Thepossibility of God Himself being the lake of fire is worthy of consideration.

We are given few details about hell, everlasting fire and the lake of fire so no one can expound with certainty as to what or where these entities are. However Yeshua speaks much about hell, so it is certain to have great significance. He speaks of the damnation, the torments and the destructive powers of hell, a place where the fire is never quenched and the worm never dies. One cannot deny the existence of hell. The Bible refers to it often as a part of the spiritual world rather than physical creation. When it states the fire cannot be put out, it is a spiritual burning not physical burning. Many people have continual torment and burning. We need to realize that there is no physical lake of fire or physical place of continual torment. Hell or the lake of fire cannot be in the sun or in the center of the earth, because both of these places are a part of the physical creation. One thing we do know about hell is that it is a place of complete separation from God and that alone would bring great torment.

And another thing we know is that hell is not eternal. Created things are not eternal! God will eventually consume hell and its inhabitants, for hell is a created place and anything created has a beginning so it must have an end. This is the difference between the seed of Adam and other creations. Adam was birthed from the father and therefore he contains the father’s eternal genetics; they are a part of his innate substance. Adam’s lineage inherited the DNA of their father; however these eternal genetics must be reborn! When they accept Christ into their being they are born into new lifefor Christ’s spirit ignites their dormant seed, shedding light into its darkened state and removes its covering of darkness. God purpose in sending His light into the world is to regenerate, meaning to bring into renewed existence, eternal life in His seed.

God’s sons and daughters, in their renewed or regenerated state, have power against the forces of darkness because their Father’s light confronts – and consumes – the darkness of evil spirit forces. Thus God admonishes His children to walk in His light. If demons, devils and evil spirit continued to stay in the presence of a regenerated Sons and Daughter, God’s light shining through His child would annihilate them.

When we allow negative forces into our lives, the forces of discouragement, depression, despondent, unforgiveness, bitterness, fear, unbelief, etc., we become prime “bait” for Satan’s kingdom to feed off the very darkness they created in us, sucking our life away. They are spiritual vampires! Satan, however has right to lay claim on our sensual life, for it is the realm over which he was granted authority. But his authority is temporary!

There is a principle in the spiritual realm of which we need to be made aware. The principle is that whatever we allow Satan to do through us; he has to do back to us. Therefore it is necessary to overcome the things that allow him entrance so we can remove his ability to do wrong things back to us. Deliverance from Satan’s attacks is based on overcoming; overcoming those sins we allow him to do through us. Too often the “little” carnal sins are what keep us in bondage.

Years ago a friend told me a little story about her young son who was having night mares. Her son often lied about little things, like if he took a piece of gum or candy he wasn’t supposed to have. She recognised that the nightmares were Satan’s lies back at to him. She explained this principle to her son and told him that if he wanted the nightmares to stop he would have to stop lying. He stopped lying and he never had another nightmare.

As our soul battles the flesh, the world and Satan, who Yeshua referred to as “the prince of this world”, in this war against the all-encompassing man of sin, Christ’s light impacts insight and strength to believer. One infusion of His light cracks the darkness of the “fallen covering”, through which a stream of light to set us free. By walking forward in His Light, we make rapid progress towards our rightful inheritance, – that of becoming a manifested child of God. The greater the light that fills our vessels, the higher we rise on God’s pathway towards manifestation. The whole of our life as a pilgrim in this age is to war against all that would keep us in darkness, – all that would feed our life to the wiles of the serpent and hinder us from manifest His life can His kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

We continue upwards, more and more caught away until we approach the final enemy – death. Even death cannot hold us once darkness is removed, for death is fostered in darkness. Paul states in 1 Corinthians: “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death” (26). The use of God’s fire in our lives is of outmost importance; it will either bring us into immortality or leave us helpless in the darkness of our fallen soul.

Peter warns that the day of the Lord will come in an unsuspecting way upon those who yet remain in darkness, “That day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; …” (II – 3:10)on those who have not allowed God’s refining fire to work in their lives. Without God’s light they will be silently overcome in these last days when “… darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people: ..” (Isaiah 60:2).

Darkness is covering the earth rapidly. It is hard to believe not only the present happenings but the swiftness by which they are happening. The spirit of antichrist is rising in a manner as never before seen. Sherlock Bally recently pointed out present happenings. He said:

“The purpose of the spirit of the antichrist that I will define for you is this:”

  1. To make the abnormal seem normal so when the devil makes his abnormal claims men will follow him.
  2. To desensitize your minds to evil so that evil will become acceptable, even preferred.
  3. To give you another scale of values so that you will see your life defined by that value system and not the word of God.

The purpose of the spirit of the antichrist being alive today is found in 1 John 4:1-4

  1. The purpose of the spirit of the antichrist is to make real today in spirit what the antichrist will be in the latter half of the tribulation period.
  2. The purpose of the spirit of the antichrist is to form an attack force against your life.
  3. The purpose of the spirit of the antichrist that is filling our world is to make the antichrist and his attributes in the flesh in the tribulation a reality to you now”.

Are we not seeing these things became reality! Can we not recognize new values being formed? Is not good called evil and evil called good? Are not standards being stretched to and beyond the breaking point? It befuddles the mind to see how the younger generation, in particular, accepts abnormal things as normal. This acceptance of the abnormal as normal is the result of years of indoctrination from school curriculum that has been promoted by secularism.

Popular media creatures like ET and Spiderman have been with us for decades. They are presented as heroic or cuddly cute friends, but in truth they are depictions of demons. Today most children are attracted to them, whereas my generation would have been afraid of them. The values promoted during our early years had Godly, not secular, values.

Secular values also govern the choice of older children. The best – selling Harry Potter books, paranormal movies and videos promote witchcraft, violence and every type of evil. All these influences foster rebellion. Children and young people are purposed to change our way of life.

Roger Rusk, in his book “The Other End of the World” said this: “The nation’s young people have been taught a science with no soul, a philosophy with no purpose, a peace with no righteousness, an art with no beauty, a music with no melody, and a love with no sacrifice. Their most popular entertainers sing with a snarl instead of a smile.”

Paul prophesied of the change in our day.“This knows also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boaster, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (11 Timothy 3:1-5)

These descriptions depict our day. Are we not living in perilous days! Our world is filling with lawlessness. Those who have not been purified in God’s refining fires will be unable to withstand the evil influences Satan is spewing at the coming kingdom of God.

Paul, in admonishing the Thessalonians, warns: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”(11 Thessalonians 2:3, 10-12).

Many today find “pleasure in unrighteousness”! But God is about to remove unrighteousness as He prepares the world for His kingdom. All evil practices will be removed, – burned up! Nothing that has its roots in darkness will be allowed to enter the kingdom age. Only “children of light” will be a part of establishing this new age. Paul says: “ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5). Though Peter states that the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in the judgement of God’s fire, it needn’t overtake those apprehending the high calling of God in this hour! “Ye are a choosing generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of hi who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light…” (1 Peter 2:9). Much work has already been accomplished in God’s first fruits, (as well as His whole harvest), are those whom Malachi speaks: “But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.” (Malachi 3:2-3). God is presently purifying anyone apprehending entrance into His kingdom, particularly “the children of the day”, those who are called to prepare the way of the Lord.

When the “children of the day” have been purified, in “…the time… that judgement must begin at the house of God:” what will happen to those who have not responded to God refining fire? “What shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? … If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” (1 peter 4:17). Most of what they accomplished in their lives will be destroyed! Paul says: “for he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the spirit shall of the spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 5:8). He further state, when addressing the sin of fornication: “Deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 4:5). In other words the sinner’s flesh life reaped corruption, only his spirit was saved. Because he had not lived for the things of God he entered eternity “empty handed”. God wants us to reap life in ALL we do, and that reaping only comes by living according to the things that pertain to the Spirit.

The various kind of fire that God uses have been presented and most are used in corrective ways. But there is also the fire of God’s wrath! Peter says the fire of God’s wrath will be used in His final destruction of evil. The third chapter of Peter explains the first earth age, “the world that then was” which was “overflowed with water” and perished, – the time from Adam to the flood. The second earth age is explained in verse seven. “The heavens and the earth, which are now … reserved, unto fire against the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men.” We are living in the second age, the time of “the heavens and the earth which are now”, – from the flood to manifestation of God from heaven. It will end in the judgement of God’s wrath as He purges the earth in preparation for His kingdom. Verse 12 and 13 described the third and final age, the kingdom age wherein we “… look for new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness”.

Peter’s declaration of God’s final judgement is confirmed by Isaiah. “Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire: …” (30:27) “And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones” (30:30) “For behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flame of fire.” (66:15).

The fire of God’s wrath is different than any other of His kinds of fire. The period of the great tribulation will be God’s corrective fire for those who have not yet been purged of carnality. Anything in them not containing His life will be burned up, but whatever is rooted in righteousness will not be harmed. The final fire of God’s wrath is to destroy evil off the earth. These two uses of fire, God’s corrective fire and the fire of his wrath, separate God’s seed from Satan’s seed, the tares. God’s wrath destroys Satan’s seed and removes it from the earth. “As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire: so shall it be in the end of this world” (Mathew 13:40).

We already see separation take place. Kamal Saleem stated that in 2011 God spoke to him and said: “I am separating the church from the world.” In 2012, he heard God said: “I am separating the church from the church.” Later God said: “I am removing my governments from the governments.” God is in the process of separating His light from darkness and also separating His governments from the government of man. He is transforming the kingdom of this world into His kingdom. The tribulation fire and the fire of His wrath are part of the transformation process. They shall come as “the flame of a devouring fire … to render his anger with fury” upon the wicked!“The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation …” (Revelation 14:10)

Revelation 9:15 tells us that the fire of God’s wrath will “…slay the third part of men.” Later we are told that another fourth of the inhabitants of the earth will be slain. Much of the population of the earth is destroyed as God’s wrath renders “his anger with fury” upon evil.

The time when God comes to judge and remove evil from the earth will be a time of great turmoil. “But the heavens and the earth … are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men. …in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” (II peter 3:7, 10B-12) Please note, however, that these verses cannot be taken literally! God will not burn up the heaven and the earth so they are no more. He is not saying that the earth itself is going to melt, nor that God is going to burn up the whole universe, including the constellations! Peter is talking about the removal of man-made governments, the ungodly systems of the world. These systems are carnal man’s institutions, – educational, political, religious or otherwise. He is talking about the ages of evil, – the canal ages of fallen Adamic man under Satan’s rule! They have accomplished their purpose!

The elements, the elemental things of this life, are the things pertaining to the fallen existence. They will melt and be burned up in the “fervent heat” of God’s wrath! God’s children who have been purified by His refining fire will not be “dissolved” in the day God’s cleanses the earth with the fire of His wrath. Isaiah 33:14-15 confirms this. “The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godliness: who of us can dwell with the consuming fires? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning? He who walks righteously and speaks what is right…” All things devoid of God’s light will be destroyed in the brightness of His coming, melting under the fervent, consuming fire of God Himself!

Then, when the carnal ages have finished their course and the systems of man have been destroyed, God will set up a new heaven and a new earth. “Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” (II Peter 3:13)“I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea” (Revelation 21:1). This will not be a new physical heavens and earth. The “new heavens” which Peter refers to is a new system of government. The “new earth” refers to a righteous people filled with His light. They will rule in the new system of government, in accordance with God’s laws and jurisdictions! Those who have risen above the canal life will be God’s arm of rulership with the mind of Christ and an immortal body! The new heavens and earth will be filled with righteousness because it is filled with righteous people! “No more sea”, – no more masses of people in turmoil.

Before the new heavens and earth are realized, however, death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14 state: “Whosoever is not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death”. When any form of evil is cast into the lake of fire it is consumed! Nothing remains except the spirit of God that fills all of creation. Every living thing is sustained by spirit, and the only source of spirit in all that exists is the Spirit of the Living God. So when God’s light and fire have consumed evil from those who are evil, nothing remains except the basis of creation, the spirit that gave them life. As is says in Ecclesiastes 12:7 “…the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” It is as when electricity is removed from a light bulb, it is then incapable of giving light; it remains a dead entity unable to perform its created function. Except in the case of evil, when the spirit is removed, all else is consumed; it is no more! This is the second death.

Satan, devils, demons and evil spirits will be consumed, not saved! As created beings they are not eternal. As previously stated, anything created has a beginning; therefore it must have an end! It is a scientific fact that a beginning must result in and end! Even Solomon says: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). The only reason God’s Sons and Daughters can receive life without beginning or end is because they were birthed, not created; eternal life is their inheritance, the quintessential foundation of their existence.

In “… the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:21), God will restore all things to their original state; all things that were a part of His original creation. But all things have not remained in their original state nor were they in His original creation! Those creatures of evil, who through their own choice recreated themselves into beings of darkness and evil, rather than remaining in their original state, are consumed when brought into contact with God’s fire, for darkness cannot exist in His light. Ezekiel says of “the anointed cherub that covereth”: “I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee”. (28:18). they cannot be restored! What would they be restored to? They are consumed! Like before they were created they no longer exist! By death. Anything apart from God’s life they chose death. Anything apart from God’s life has no substance, no innate or eternal force through which to perpetuate existence. One might liken their state to that of a black hole in our universe. Scientific astronomical studies say that when a large star collapses it continues to fall in on itself and creates a stellar black hole. Back holes are places where ordinary gravity has become so extreme that is overwhelms all other forces in the universe. Once inside, nothing can escape a black hole’s gravity – not even light. Black holes are gravity relentless pull.

In Satan’s case, his relentless pull of darkness and evil, which is his entire makeup, makes it impossible for him to return to his original state. Like black holes, Satan and his followers, by choosing darkness, collapsed their original state of light forming a black hole of nothingness – except evil – apart from God. No light remains!

However, all parts of creation that Satan distorted from its original state, rather than by its own choosing, can be restored. God can restore anything that retains a semblance of the original. Even the most debauched individual can be restored to God if they truly repent! Contrarily, when Satan and his followers recreated themselves into something other than their intended state, like the black holes they obliterated their original. Evil is their entire substance! Creation was merely affected by evil dark forces, – overshadowed by their presence; creation’s innate substance is not evil. Therefore God can restore the twisted, the perverted, the harmed by outside forces and return them to their original state. When this restoration occurs, the evil distorting forces are destroyed in the process.

All of creation is predestined to be brought into the light of God’s fire! Anything impure, the “hay wood and stubble”, will be consumed. “If any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hey, stubble; every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is” (I Corinthians 3:11-13). That which contains pure substance will be refined, but it will remain after the consuming fire has done its work. The pure gold is left, only the dross is burned up! That is why God’s first fruits are being tried in a furnace – seven times hotter – at this time. This is their deliverance! Because they desire God’s righteousness, the “seven – times – hotter” fire is causing them to overcome any remaining vestige of darkness that would detract them from their destined calling.

Rosemary Garzon states, in her May – June 2013 issue of “The Dew upon the Rose”:

“It is needful to understand that this “overcoming” is not only for us individually, but it is part of His Plan to restore all creation….

“There are some that believe that we have nothing to do ourselves, for Jesus accomplished everything for us. We are to sit back and wait for him to change us with no effort on our part to overcome. They believe if we are suffering or have problems, then there is something wrong with us, – no faith, sin in our lives, etc. Not so! Jesus made the way to take back all that was lost in the fall. He opened the door for His Body members to take their places in this battle. His Elect have been the alert, standing in the wings behind the curtains that separate heaven from earth, each awaiting his appointed time to be sent to earth to participate in the Battle of the ages. This battle is for the explicit purpose of taking back all that was lost in the fall, and deposing Satan and his crew of the power that was delegated to him for a season. It is the hour to oust him from his authority over the earth and man. The battle has been in preparation for ages – all part of God’s plan for man!”

In God’s plan for man the canal age is consummated by a people who have overcome death and are resurrected into life and immortality. Then Satan will no longer have power to hinder them from bringing the world under God’s dominion, – Theocratic rule. God’s first command to Adam, “to take dominion,” will finally be realized.

The righteous people who will take dominion are His first fruits, those who have experienced His corrective fire the past several decades. They will not remain in their old “earthly” state of mortality but be raised into immortality! Hallelujah! “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years” (Revelation 20:6). God’s law will go forth through them. Micah prophesised 2700 years ago: “… the law shall go forth out of Zion.” (4:2)

From the time Solomon built the temple, Zion became the center of God’s activity. Zion included the temple area where God dwelt. Figuratively Zion refers to God’s people. God’s temple in the kingdom age is found in His people! They are the temple of Living Stones! Paul reminds us of this in II Corinthians 6:16. “Ye are the temple of the living God; …. I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Zion is the dwelling place of God on earth; His place of habitation within His redeemed. “For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest forever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it. (Psalms 132:13-14)

Yahweh, whose chosen dwelling place is Zion, is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. His spirit is the only force present from eternity; it had no beginning! He existed before anything presently created existed. He IS – past, present, future and forever – eternally! Of Him, to Him, and through Him all things exist. All that is of Him, that finds perpetuation through His life, will have eternal continuance.

He is the great, the only, I AM! The living presence, the substance and source of all that is. To Him, and Him alone, go all honour, praise, loyalty and worship. Without Him we are nothing, we would find no continuing existence. Nothing can hinder nor detour His plan, he merely uses all things to bring his purpose to reality.

YES! OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE! His brightness purifies, refines and consumes until only His Spirit, His peace and His righteousness remain. “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. … The LORD shall arise upon thee and his glory shall be seen upon thee.” (Isaiah 60:1-2b)

Our loving Father has presented this prize of the high calling of sonship to us; to fellowship with Him throughout eternity, – a treasure beyond value! Even the angels marvel at what has been made available to mankind – that we could become the very sons and daughters of God, members of His own household, ruling with Him over the rest of creation. In light of this great prize all the sufferings of the present time and all the struggles to overcome pale in comparison. They are but fleeting moments of surrendering back to God that which is already His! He freely gives of His Spirit to bring us through every hardship and equips us to finish our race.

May we invest in the things of His Spirit, the things that remain after God’s fire has been applied. Let us turn our eyes from this carnal life and its vain ambitions, not being detoured from receiving every good and profitable gift given from above. Before us lies the hope and promise of every longing of soul; behind the weariness and desolation of the carnal life.

Weary pilgrim, know this – the beauty and bounty of Eden are before us. All we can possibly hope for ahead. It is the kingdom of God in all its glory and slender. The former life holds nothing of worth or promises for the Sons and Daughters of God who have caught the vision of kingdom life. Paul admonishes: “… this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14). Let us be quick to leave the former landscape and enter the joys of God’s kingdom as it is now being established upon the earth.

“Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely” (Song of Solomon 2:13-14)
