Overcoming Hindrances To Know God As Father

Thoughts For The Individual Heart:

i.          I know God is my Father, but are there still issues keeping me from experiencing His Love?

ii.         How can I overcome the hindrances to knowing the love of God as my Heavenly Father?

John 1:12: “But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”. However, many Christians do not relate to God as a Father, and are so afraid of God that they cannot pursue

a Father-Son relationship with Him, as we see in the life of Jesus. Why?

* This study seeks to discuss possible causes of our not growing in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

1.         Some Hindrances To Experiencing/Growing In The Knowledge Of God As Father:

a          Hidden Sin: Since the Garden of Eden, man has run away from God because of the sins of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life (Genesis 3:8-10). Sin brings along the three consequences – Shame, Fear and Guilt.

b          Pride: Many times, man is so full of pride that he thinks he does not need God. Striving to live our lives by ourselves can keep us from trusting the Father – for His instructions and help. (James 4:6) we can only experience Him as Father by acknowledging our weaknesses to make our way through life.

c          Unbelief / Hardness of Heart: (Hebrews 11:6) Not believing Gods word no matter how much we hear.

d          Legalism: Trying to earn God’s love with service to Him: Church going, praying, fasting, etc.

e          Ignorance of God’s word: Not having an idea who God really is, and see Him only as a harsh and Unforgiving Being only concerned with doling out punishments, tests, and trials, (1 John 4:16, 18).

f           Fear of Rejection: We are not sure that the Father can accept us again after all we have done wrong in times past. (Ephesians 1:7; Ephesians 3:17-19).

g          Severe Personal Life Experiences: We feel God has failed us in times past, and we cannot trust Him any – more. But Jesus promises us that God is a good God. (Mathew 7:9-11; 1 John 4:18).

h          Wounds from Close Authority Figures:  We many times judge God as Father through the wounds we have received from our earthly fathers or from close relations /friends, teachers etc. (Jeremiah 31:3; Hebrews 12:9-10)

i           Fear of Submitting to the discipline of God: (Hebrews 12:5-8; v 9)

j           Ungratefulness for the love, mercy and blessings of God received so far: (Psalm 103:2; Psalm 100:4)

k          Bad Company /Evil Companions who despise God’s mercy and love: (Psalm 1:1-6)

l           Satan: The most important mission of Satan is to prevent us from becoming the true sons of God Meditate on the truth of God’s word-so you can resist the devil (James  4:7). If you continue in Jesus’ words, you will be His disciple, and the Truth shall make you free (John 8:32). Amen

2..     How Can We Overcome Hindrances To Knowing God As Father

           Questions For Personal Meditation:

a       On what basis do I serve God (fear, performance or being religious, etc.) – (John 14:18)

   b       Am I at rest in God’s Love? – (1 John 4:16-18; Matthew 11:28-30)

c       Is God an occasional Guest, or am I in a growing Relationship with Him?

Mary – (Luke 10 :38-42).

Key Verses:

*          In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

*          And the servant abideth not in the house for ever, but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed (John 8:36).
